Garden With A View
A simple design with high-impact results that connect this small garden to the surrounding landscape.
For this garden, a new-build home on the edge of the Peak District, the brief was simple; to create a more inviting garden for people and wildlife. Somewhere to enjoy gardening and a cup of tea or glass of wine.
Measuring a modest 90m2, this garden started as bland space that felt small and lacking in character with just a lawn, patio and tall timber fence. Our approach to the design was simple, but with high-impact results. It was less about what we added, but rather what we took away - the rear boundary fence.
By replacing it permeable black metal railings, on top of a low stone retaining wall, we revealed expansive views of the stunning rolling countryside beyond, making the garden feel instantly, and infinitely, larger. Utilising these views of the 'borrowed' landscape gave the space a new sense of openness and connection to its surroundings.
Alongside this impressive new focal point, we upgraded the existing patio and added a second seating area, accessed via stepping stones across the lawn. A wildlife-friendly planting scheme, including a pear tree and low evergreen hedging, also helps to frame the view and blend the boundary between the garden and the wider landscape. Though simple, the final transformation is striking and will continue to grow stronger over time as it matures.
